Weight Loss Tips :: Weight Loss Exercise Programs Targeted Weight Loss Exercise Programs to "Spot Reduce Fat"Do they really exist? Do they really work?Since you've clicked on this article I assume you're like me in one respect: You would love to target the fat on one or two troublesome parts of your body and blast it into oblivion. Sigh. If only it was possible. The short and dirty answer is . . . you cannot spot reduce. There are no guaranteed weight loss exercise programs to target the fat in your trouble spots. Wherever the fat is on your body, it belongs to your whole body. As you start to lose weight your body - and not you - will decide where on your body the fat disappears from.Sit-ups will not cause you to lose abdominal fat. Leg raises won't cause you to lose thigh fat. Sorry. Believe me I wish it were true. The good news is these and other exercises will help to tone and better shape your body. You could be losing inches in your trouble areas. However, this is not the same as spot reducing fat in weight loss exercise programs. And there really isn't much you can do about where your body decides to store excess fat on your body either. This is due to a genetic factor. For example: Women tend to accumulate fat in their hips, buttocks, and thighs. Whereas men tend to collect fat in their abdomen. Ladies, lest you get too upset with these differences there is a plus side [pun intended] to this. We may not like the looks of it (personally it's my thighs), but it isn't dangerous for our health. There's even some evidence it may be good for our health. Seems like that last sentence ought to be a statement from "Ripley's Believe It Or Not." Watch out guys. That abdominal fat is dangerous for your health. (Check out this weight loss fitness program page for more information on the risk and assessment of abdominal fat.) It has been linked with heart disease, diabetes and a host of other health problems. Bottom line is that men with a large pot belly are at an increased health risk; however women with large hips or thighs are not necessarily at risk . . . at least not from the fat on the hips, thighs or buttocks. Weight loss exercise programs that promise to spot reduce fat are another diet myth. So the answer to getting rid of the excess fat in your trouble areas is to get back down to a healthy weight. And do a variety of exercises (interval training, resistance training, some aerobic) to tone the muscles in your body and drop inches. And unfortunately we're not all destined to have the "perfect" body. I personally think the definition of "perfect" body is not the pencil thin models (men or women) we see on TV or in the magazines. Choose a weight loss exercise program you enjoy. One you'll actually "do." Just get to a healthy weight, be physically fit and you will look great. You really will! |
